Every coach has been there. In the middle of a coaching session, instead of staying fully with the client, the mind wanders.
We may start judging what the client is saying while in coaching session. We may anticipate what they “should” do next.We may even wonder if the session is “going well.”
In those moments, we lose presence. And when presence slips, so does the depth of the coaching.
This is why Coaching Competency 5: Maintaining Presence is so powerful.
It reminds us that coaching is not about rehashing the past or worrying about outcomes, it is about staying in this exact moment with curiosity, openness, and trust.

How this insight helps you prepare
1. Be fully present
Like reading a one-way book, enter the coaching session with your full attention. This is your time to reflect, grow, and gain clarity.
ASK: What is the most important preparation i need to do before the session knowing I cannot revisit this exact coaching session later?
2. Be honest and intentional
The only place you can act is in the present. That requires honesty, openness, and intention in dialogue.
ASK: What am I avoiding in my life, now, that may interfere with this session?
3. Commit to Action
Every coaching conversation can become a stepping stone to the next chapter of your life, not just the client’s!
ASK: What small shift will move me forward to the next chapter with clarity?
Preparation and practice matter more than results. If we come with presence, clarity, and intention, results take care of themselves.

And presence is not just a skill to “apply” but it is a practice to cultivate.
Practices like Antar Mouna (Inner Silence) from Indic Wisdom support coaches to remain grounded and available to our clients, free from judgment.
If you’ve ever found yourself silently judging your client, perhaps it is a signal to strengthen your presence.
We are gathering in Tiruvannamalai from September 19 to 22 for a coaching retreat in the sacred presence of Arunachala, where we will learn and practice to maintain presence with the blessings of this timeless space.
