Coaching with Aparigraha

True growth often thrives on unexpected detours.

In coaching, a rigid approach can do more harm than good. It can limit not only the client’s progress but also our growth as coaches.

The Yogic concept of Aparigraha, or non covetousness, offers a powerful alternative.

What is Aparigraha?

It is the practice of non encroachment into another’s space, limelight, or due. In coaching, it means remembering that the conversation is entirely about the client.

Our role is to hold the space for them to explore, discover, and grow.

How to Bring Aparigraha into Coaching

1. Co create each session

Let us premeditated structures. Let the session take shape around the client’s unique needs and aspirations.

Think of yourself as providing the stage while they script the story.

2. Partner, but let the client lead Some clients may look to us for answers. Resist the urge to take over.

Allow reflective silences and remember it is the client’s airtime.

3. Focus on progress, not just the finish line Not every conversation needs to be wrapped up neatly. Valuable insights often emerge when we give time for ideas to deepen.

4. Practice letting go Our success as coaches is not in ticking markers for evaluation.

It is in enabling the client to leave with an insight, a plan, or a new perspective, even if that does not happen every time.

5. Embrace feedback Be open to giving and receiving feedback. It keeps the coaching relationship alive, honest, and growth focused.

By integrating Aparigraha into our coaching, we create conversations that flow like water nurturing the roots of a plant, supporting steady and sustainable growth, one session at a time.

What is one tip you would share with fellow coaches to create more spacious and empowering conversations?
